This piece captures a tiny fraction of the heartbreaking reality of pigs confined in factory farms, their eyes reflecting sorrow as tears stream down their faces. The bleakness of their existence is palpable, depicting the harsh conditions they endure. Most pigs are slaughtered at just 6 months old, a fraction of their natural lifespan, all for the sake of consumer demand. These intelligent animals face unimaginable suffering as they are often gassed, which can cause up to 45 seconds to several minutes of excruciating pain, or they are electrically stunned, a process that frequently fails to render them unconscious. Tragically, many remain conscious as their throats are slit, enduring intense pain as they bleed out.
The tags on the pigs' ears in this artwork represent Canadian Bills C-205, which failed to pass, and C-275, a federal bill currently in progress. These bills are designed to further restrict whistleblowers from exposing animal cruelty on farms under the guise of biohazard security. In reality, these bills protect inhumane practices that increase profits at the expense of animal welfare.
Other common and brutal practices in pig farming include tail docking and teeth clipping, often done on piglets without anesthesia. Additionally, a disturbing method called pig thumping—where weak piglets are killed by being slammed against concrete—is still common practice in many countries, including Canada.
Mother pigs, or sows, are kept in farrowing crates—narrow metal enclosures—during childbirth and until their piglets are weaned. These crates are so restrictive that the sows cannot turn around or lay down comfortably.
This artwork serves as a bold statement on the cruelty of modern farming practices and a plea for reflection on the choices that perpetuate this suffering.
